Among the scattered fringe cities bordering the Cienbal desert, the true name of the Monster of Karth is spoken only in whispers...RAZ I'SYUL ARRO. A sellsword of the utmost caliber, Raz is a killer of paramount skill and highest regard. Towering tall even amongst the atherian, he is the only of his kind to live free in the "civilized" confines of mankind's varied cultures. He has no need of loyalties, his sole affections pledged to the gold crowns that buy his time and skills.
Wed to his blades, Raz's only friends are the Moon and Her Stars and the shadows they bring with the night. But Raz was not born to the mercenary's way, to the butchery and battle of day-by-day survival.
Raz, like a sword, was hammered from steel and fire and ashy smoke, forged on the ruins of an old life. And Raz knows who he owes this new path to, this carved way of blood and iron. The Monster of Karth, after all, would never forget who gave him that name. And some debts can't be paid in gold....

Child of the Daystar is among the best books I've ever read. The plot moves perfectly. The author is able to evoke emotions on a level I have not found in most other books. I felt like I understood the characters. I think I even found my pulse racing during a few of the action scenes. The plot does conclude. There's an overall arc that we can see continuing across the series, but the events of this book end in a way that make the end seem final - for now. There is sex, drugs, religion, and language, but it's all used very specifically to advance the character development. We don't get erotica, preaching, or sailor-mouths here.
If you're thinking of reading a book in this genre, get this one - it's one of the best I've read in a long time.

Child of the Daystar (Audible Audio Edition) Bryce O'Connor Mikael Naramore Audible Studios Books Reviews
This novel goes right up there with all the other epic fantasy novels that you can imagine. From page one, you get top-notch writing and excellent characters, all put into a unique, well-described world. This novel tells the story of Raz, an atherian child who was found as an infant and raised by a nomadic desert tribe (atherians are lizard-like mountain people, of which some like Raz are born with wings). There are three parts to the book, each told at a different point in Raz's life--the first part as an infant, the second a teenager, and the third as a young adult. I love how the first part was told from the point of view of the desert tribe, as it really let me get to know these people that took Raz in and fleshed them out as strong side characters.
This novel is all about forging Raz into the hero that he will eventually be, and unfortunately few heroes are made without some sort of tragedy. I loved how well the author depicted Raz's struggles through the third part of the book, his anger and sadness and hatred. I also like how another budding protagonist, Syrah, was placed in juxtaposition to Raz. Syrah exemplifies the teachings of the temple that raised her, which encourages kindness, generosity and charity. For Syrah, murder is an unforgiveable crime. Meanwhile, Raz is a killing machine, slaying criminals left and right in his attempt to make the world a better place. Despite how different they are, it's clear that their destinies will be quickly intertwined in future books, and I look forward to seeing how they interact.
I am absolutely placing this novel as one of my favorite fantasy books of all time. Raz is a character I absolutely love (I mean, how can you beat a character that's essentially a dragon raised by humans, a dragon that is an epic fighter with strong morals and a clear destiny ahead of him?). Also, I have to say that the cover for this novel is amazing. Whoever did the cover, I applaud you. The drawing of Raz is extremely detailed, right down to his coloring and his two-headed spear. I await the sequel with bated breath.
Raz I’Syul Arro is a male atherian, a sort of giant humanoid lizard, but of the rarest variety because he has wings. As an infant, he is rescued from slavers by a nomadic clan living in the Cienbal desert that adopts and raises him as human, teaching him in particular to keep his savagery in check.
However, following a particularly dramatic event, he becomes a ruthlessly efficient killer for hire, bent on vengeance and murderous retribution against all slavers that he can lay his hands on. He is known as the Monster of Karth (one of the Fringe Cities of the desert) and is stronger, faster, more ferocious and more agile than humans, adding his tail, claws and teeth to his tailor-wade lace, sword, dagger and armour. This goes on until the moment he realises that he is being used and played…
In addition to the somewhat gory and largely one-sided fights Raz gets into, of which they are plenty, one the main attractions of this book is his personality, and how he struggles to retain a “human” conscience and to keep his savagery, violence and animal instincts under control, especially when emotionally challenged.
Another interesting feature is the somewhat desolate world itself, with the harsh North and its terrible winters on the one hand, and the unforgiving Cienbal desert with its ferocious predators. I particularly liked the desert cat and the gigantic scorpion, each one as murderous as the other.
I was however a bit less impressed with the “non-violent” religious/magical order headquartered in an old fortress in the fat North, and who happen to be experts at unarmed combat. Maybe this is because they “looked and felt” a bit too good (and nice) to be true or perhaps also because this feature was a bit less original.
Four strong stars.
